During his 25-year career in journalism, Fred D. Garth has worked for media giants Gannett, the New York Times, Primedia, EMAP and Petersen Publishing.

Starting out as a sport’s writer for the Times-Daily newspaper in Florence, Alabama, Garth cut his teeth reporting on high-school sports, NASCAR and Auburn University football. In 1987 he landed a position as editor for Scuba Times magazine. For the next fifteen years he covered the ocean environments of the Caribbean, Hawaii and Indo-Pacific. Along the way, he contributed to dozens of books, films and groups such as the Cousteau Society and National Geographic Explorer Television.

Garth went on to become publisher of Scuba Times magazine. In 1995, under his leadership, Scuba Times because the first consumer magazine to print on environmentally-sensitive Totally Chlorine Free paper. He has also served in editorial and publishing roles for numerous other magazines including Skin Diver (Petersen Publishing) and Fathoms (G2).

In 2005 Fred left the magazine business to focus on writing fiction. To date, he has completed three novels – The Cure, Press Trip and Perdido Stories. Portions of each book are available chapter by chapter exclusively on this website. Garth lives in Florida with his wife and two daughters. He is currently working on his fourth book, Perdido II.
